What is the purpose of doing "abishekam" to idols in the temple?

There have been debates regarding conducting abishekam to stone idols in temple. These age-old granite idols have the tendency to develop cracks on aging.
Regular contact with agents such as milk, honey and oil help to keep idol intact and avoid cracking. Thus preserving the ancient sculptures.
Why did the anointed offerings (abisheka porul) are offered in the temple as "prasatham" ?
The base on which these idols are mounted is made up of a specific alloy of gold, silver and traces of lead, which have medicinal properties when combined with milk and honey. This is why the milk, honey and panchamirtham used for abishekam are distributed and are said to have special properties to cure certain diseases.
Why do take a bath after attending a funeral. ?
This is a preventive measure taken to prevent any infection from the dead bodies to infect us. In ancient times, there were no vaccines for all the deadly diseases like hepatitis and smallpox so there was a chance of getting infected easily. That's why it's customary to take a shower after attending a funeral.
Why do we greet others by joining hands as Vanakkam and Namaste?
According to Indian tradition and culture, it is customary to greet others by saying Vanakkam and Namaste.

The temple bell was made of metals such as copper, cadmium, bronze and other many metals. The quantity of each metal was based on very accurate scientific calculation. When the bell was rung, there creates a harmony between the right and left lobes of the Brain. The Echo that comes by ringing the bell lasts for seven seconds. In that seven seconds, the seven chakras in the body will be activated.
Why Indian's do fasting?
According to Ayurveda, fasting helps to cleanse the whole body system and regulates body function. A complete fasting is good for health with occasional sips of effective Lemon juice. Fasting helps to decrease the intake of acids thus regulating stress and hysteria.
Why do we visit temple?
The most beautiful and majestic temples can be found in India. They are not just built for beauty. There is a scientific reason behind every temple. Temples in India are built in the areas where emits maximum positive energy. The idols are mounted on the copper plates in the sanctum Santorum or garbhagraha. When a person visit a temple, they came within the radius of this energy magnetic field thereby imbibing a lot of positive energy.
Why do we feed crows before a meal?
In Indian tradition, crows are given special importance as they are considered as ancestors. After the meal for the day is prepared, a portion of every meal is kept outside for crows to feast on, so that the members of the family have the satisfaction of having fed their ancestors.

There's a scientific reason behind this old-age tradition. In ancient times, when there was no electricity and hence no proper light in the early hours in the morning. People were doubtful of the food they cooked. The crow as we all know, is a creature that can eat almost anything but it have the tendency to secure the presence of any kind of poisons in food. It simply refuses food, if it sense any poison in the food. People from the ancient times happened to use the crow and tester for food smartly, without harming it.

Tanks, ponds and Rivers were the ancient water bodies. Also in ancient times coins in India were made of copper. When we throw copper coins in the well, it helped the dust particles to settle down thereby making the drinking available on the top.
Why do we not sleep with our head towards north?
In India, if we sleep with our head towards the north is considered as inviting evil spirits and ghosts. A myth but there was a scientific reason behind this. It is well known that the earth has a magnetic field and our body also has own magnetic field. When we sleep with our head towards the SOUTH, the unlike poles of the earth and our body attract each other results in well being and the feel of slept well.
Similarly, when we sleep towards the EAST, the energy of the sun enters the body through the head and leaves the feet leaving a cool head and warm feet.
When we sleep with our head towards the WEST, the reverse happen leaving a warm head and a cool feet - unpleasant sensation.

OM is considered as the primordial sound of the universe. Chanting of OM helps the mind to calm down. When we pronounce OM, as we say 'A' the lower portions of the body are activated. As we say 'U' the chest area is activated. With 'M' the face and brain gets activated.

Silk has the capacity to absorb magnetic energy. The constant friction between the body and the silk clothes enhance the absorption of positive energy while in pooja and the devotee tend to absorb more positive energy and leads to calmness.
Why do we start with spice and end with sweet?
Our ancestors taught the fact that we should start a meal from eating spicy foods and end with sweets.
We know that when we intake Spicy foods, the digestive juices and acids are secreted which enhances the digestive process. Sweets cause slow digestion. Sweet has the tendency to absorb more amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan increase the level of serotonin (a neurotransmitter) is associate with the sense of well being, that is the feeling we experience at the end of full meal.
